Sociolinguistics

All modern human cultures have language, but it is surprising what effect the language we speak can have on how we view the world. Sociolinguists study how languages change and are shaped by society, and how society is shaped by language. How a person speaks can signal a huge amount of information about that person’s background, social class and economic status, even within one ‘language’. Sociolinguists study these cultural differences in speech, and how they can signal whether someone is to be included or excluded from a community. They also study how a language has changed since written records began, and the ways in which these changes occur.
